 About Us

Our Story Lastplaces Amazon

The Last Places Amazon project began in 1987, when Marco Lima served as a reserve officer in the Brazilian Army. During this time, he collaborated with National Geographic, documenting the invasion of Yanomami territories by illegal gold miners. Marco spent one month in the field alongside journalist Michel Nickel, exposing the environmental and human impact of illegal mining in the Amazon.

In 1988, Marco was sent by the Federal University of Pará deep into the Amazon rainforest to conduct research on the symbiotic relationship between monkeys and fish in the Amazon River ecosystem. He lived and worked inside the rainforest for four years, an experience that profoundly shaped his connection to the environment and the Indigenous communities who call it home.

Over the following three decades, Marco continued his work as a photographer and documentarian, collaborating with major international media outlets including National Geographic, BBC, Discovery Channel, CNN, Asahi TV, and CCTV International. Through this work, he became one of the most respected visual storytellers of the Amazon and its peoples.

Inspired by these experiences, Marco and his wife Marineti decided to create a travel company dedicated to responsible and community-based tourism in the Amazon rainforest. Their vision was to work side by side with Indigenous communities, ensuring that tourism would support cultural preservation, environmental protection, and sustainable livelihoods. This vision became
the seed of Last Places Amazon.
